What is PAT Testing?
PAT Testing is a formal electrical safety inspection and test that is carried out on all electrical appliances that are not part of the fixed installation of a building.
What is Included in PAT Testing?
This includes obvious items like table lamps, kettles, toasters & fridges. But it would also include items like electric radiators, ovens/cookers and electric hand dryers because though they’re often connected to the fixed electrical installation, they are not classed as part of the installation.
It’s worth noting, that in the past PAT Testing (or Portable Appliance Testing) was thought to only include items that have a plug on them. Electricians employed to test the safety of the fixed installation would not necessarily consider items such as the cooker or electric radiators as part of their remit. The result? Often the most important items would go unchecked for electrical safety.
Though the expression ‘PAT Testing’ is here to stay – probably because it’s the most concise and well known, the most accurate designation is: (Deep breath…) The In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment (or Electrical Equipment Testing).
Why is PAT Testing Important?
Any item that uses electricity could become unsafe and present a serious hazard to those using it. PAT Testing is an accepted formal way of checking the safety of any device connected to the electrical installation of a building. So PAT Testing is simply about doing what we reasonably can to look after the safety of others.
It’s also the most commonly accepted way of systematically checking and documenting the safety of electrical items that tenants, guests, employees and members of the public may come into contact with. It is a tangible demonstration of an awareness to look after and maintain the safety of electrical equipment.
